Cold East Wind Threatens The Garden

The coldest temperatures of the past four years are forecasted for this week. The water in the garden is already starting to freeze. We have moved most of the tender plants into the garage and shed. I know the garage will stay above freezing, but I'm not so sure how cold the shed will get...so the lemons and the gardenias are in the garage the rest of the plants are in the shed...I hope the "shed plants" don't get their feelings hurt by being a little low on the priority list! I am curious to see how the vegetable garden comes through the cold, we have a lot of things that are ALMOST big enough to harvest.


I spread a few shovel fulls of bark mulch over the crowns of a few questionably hardy plants in the garden, mostly Hebe and hardy fuchsia. If something doesn't make it through the cold, it will be an opportunity to plant something new next spring!

The Min Pins are hating the cold, it looks so warm and sunny outside, but then they find out that it is really only 34 degrees with the east wind making it feel like 20! At least the sun comes through the glass so they can sunbathe inside next to the heater vent.

We may have snow late in the week!

Heavy Snow

It has continued to snow off and on all day, so much for the trace to and inch they forecasted last night! Heavy snow on evergreen plant branches can cause them to break. I went out and knocked the snow off of the Little Gem Magnolia, I don't want to chance a broken branch.

The pond is now covered with snow...Berry has put a few foot prints in it, but I think he is afraid of falling in. That fear is probably a good thing!

Wow, the garden is so pretty in the snow! All of the edges are softened, the piles of empty pots are hidden under a fluffy blanket of white, other than a few spots of yellow snow, the garden looks pristine.

I am getting a little concerned about the water pots...I put a plastic container weighted with some rocks into the water lily pot, thinking it would relieve some of the pressure of the ice on the pot, but it has frozen deep enough to push the plastic container up out of the pot. I think I will need to buy a bird bath heater to keep the pot from freezing again.

Snow in the Garden

I woke up this morning and was disappointed by the lack of snow...But then at 8:30 huge flakes started to fall! What a pretty sight. It only snowed for a short while, then the sun came out, even prettier.

The forecast is for very cold weather this week, lows in the upper teens and highs not much above freezing. We watered all of the tender plants a few days ago, and this afternoon I will move most of them into the garage; I don't want to take any chances with the lemons!
