Rats are so disgusting. I love most of the critters in our garden, I even encourage some of them, especially the birds. But rats are a different story. The pest control company says they don't get many calls about rats in the summer, except when it is hot. The extreme heat we had caused the rats to come out looking for a cool spot and for water.
We are good about keeping the garden clean and mostly free of food for pests. We have had rats in our shed in the past so all fertilizer is now stored in hard plastic bins, we always bury fresh vegetable scraps deep in the compost bin, and keep the area around the bird feeders clean. I found information on rat control on the UC Davis website. From the information on the site it looks like we are doing everything right. I'm hopeful that once they are gone, they won't come back.
